Birmingham-Southern, Shelton State partner to improve transfer process

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –

Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) and Shelton State Community College (SSCC) will sign an articulation agreement October 16 that will expedite the completion of a bachelor’s degree at BSC for Shelton State students. The signing will take place at 2:30 p.m. at SSCC in Tuscaloosa.

The agreement ensures that students who have earned associate’s degrees at SSCC can seamlessly continue their education at BSC. Those who have earned degrees in arts and sciences will have fulfilled Birmingham-Southern’s general education requirements with the exception of a class in writing reinforcement and a capstone course. The contract with Shelton State is Birmingham-Southern’s eleventh articulation agreement.

“BSC is making the transfer process more efficient and transparent through articulation agreements. Now, students who started their education somewhere else can more easily transfer to BSC and complete their bachelors’ degree in our personalized academic environment,” said President Daniel B. Coleman, who will attend the signing ceremony at Shelton State along with BSC Provost Dr. Bradley Caskey.

This year, BSC welcomed its largest incoming group of transfer students to date. More than 40 percent of the 57 transfer students who arrived in August – up from 44 transfer students last year – came to BSC from a community college.

“I feel that articulation agreements between universities and community colleges help to expand access to post-secondary education to persons who, due to geography or finances, would not otherwise be able to afford or attempt a four-year college degree,” Shelton State President Dr. Bill Ashley said.

In recent years, BSC has completed articulation agreements with the following two-year colleges: Bevill State Community College, Calhoun Community College, Chattahoochee Valley Community College, Coastal Alabama Community College, Gadsden State Community College, Jefferson State Community College, Lawson State Community College, Northeast Alabama State Community College, Shelton State Community College, Snead State Community College, and Wallace State Community College.
