“My highest priority for the funds is to support initiatives that will increase the enrollment and retention of first-generation college students, particularly students of color,” Flaherty-Goldsmith said.

“This grant will allow us to continue our work on making the life-changing education we provide available to a broader range of students, and to ensuring that all of our students are equipped to succeed,” Flaherty-Goldsmith said. “I am honored to have been one of 16 new liberal arts college presidents selected by the Mellon Foundation to receive this grant.”

The Mellon Foundation works to promote and strengthen the contributions of the humanities and the arts, making grants in five different areas. This award falls under its Higher Education and Scholarship in the Humanities program.
