Outright Gifts

An outright gift puts your contribution to work immediately — funding existing programs or creating a reliable source of future income as part of the College’s endowment. An outright gift may comprise almost any asset of value. You may also make a pledge commitment to be paid over up to five years.

  • Cash is the simplest and easiest gift. It can be made via check, credit/debit card, Apple Pay/Google Pay, bank transfer, or wire transfer.

Gifts may also be made via wire transfer to BSC’s account at ServisFirst. Please contact us at [email protected] or 205-226-4909 for the account and routing numbers.
  • Appreciated securities, stocks, and bonds provide considerable tax advantages when transferred to BSC before they are sold. If you have held your securities for more than one year, your gift may provide a twofold tax benefit: an income-tax deduction and elimination of the capital-gains tax due on their sale. Click here for our online form and other helpful information.
  • Real estate — including your personal residences, a second home, income property, and vacant land — offer many tax and other benefits. For example, it is possible to give only a portion of the property (an undivided percentage interest) while retaining the rest for other purposes.
  • Personal property — including rare books, works of art, collectibles, and tangible items of demonstrable value — may enable you to make a significant gift to support BSC with tax benefits to you.

Driven to Succeed scholars Mac Delay '20 and Shivangi Patel ’19
“BSC has shaped me to become a better version of myself. I have gained so many meaningful experiences, and this scholarship allowed me to pursue several possibilities in my education.” – Shivangi Patel ’19

BSC’s Driven to Succeed is a special scholarship for Alabama residents, funded by proceeds from sales and renewals of BSC car tags. When you purchase the BSC specialty license plate, the College receives $48.75 as a charitable contribution, you share your BSC pride, and you contribute to the education of deserving students.

Car Tag FAQs

  •

How much does it cost to get a BSC tag in Alabama?

The cost is $50.00 plus the standard registration fee of $24.25 to purchase the license plate. The $50.00 additional fee must be paid each time the license plate is renewed. The fee will not be prorated (if you purchase the license plate six months into your registration year, the entire $50.00 additional fee still must be paid).

  •

    Is my fee tax-deductible?

A portion of your $50 fee is tax-deductible. For a gift acknowledgment:

    • Email a scanned copy of your receipt to [email protected].
    • Or mail a copy to the Office of Advancement, Attention: Car Tag Donation, Birmingham-Southern College, 900 Arkadelphia Road, Box 549003, Birmingham, AL 35254

Note that the state doesn’t let us know when you register a BSC tag, so please inform us so we can thank you and update our records!

  •

Is any documentation required to purchase the license plate?

No documentation is needed. The plates are available to anyone registering private passenger vehicles or motor homes in Alabama.

  •

Where can I get a BSC license plate?

The BSC license plate can be purchased at the local tag office in the county where you reside. Find the Motor Vehicle Office in your county. Pre-numbered plates may be obtained immediately at the time of purchase.

  •

Can I personalize my BSC license plate?

Yes. There is no additional cost for personalized tags. If a personalized message is approved by the Department of Revenue, you will pay for the tag and will be issued a 60-day temporary tag for each personalized license plate ordered (plus month and year decals to be affixed to each plate when received). Reserve a personalized tag message online here.

Once manufactured, the license plate will be shipped directly to you, normally in about 6 weeks. Personalized license plates in this category are transferable, at the option of the transferor, to the transferor’s spouse or child upon payment of the transfer fee.

  •

Do I have to wait to purchase the BSC tag during my tag renewal month?

You can purchase the BSC tag anytime, regardless of your renewal month.

  •

How do I renew my BSC tag?

Once you have your tag, you can renew it online or at any local Motor Vehicle office in the county where you reside.

  •

    When are plates renewed?

The Alabama Department of Revenue has a staggered monthly registration system based on the first letter of your last name. Motor vehicle registrations expire on the last day of the designated renewal month. Leased, commercial and fleet vehicles are subject to renewal in the months of October and November, and the registrations for these types of vehicles expire on November 30.

    Hilltop Parent & Family Fund

From move-in day to graduation and beyond, parents and families are a key part of students’ BSC experience. Every year, through the Hilltop Parent & Family Fund, parents and families play an invaluable role in the growth and positive change happening on campus. This vital fund strengthens our ability to provide one of the country’s most outstanding liberal arts experiences.

In the past three years, parents and family members have supported several key projects. In 2017-18, gifts supported renovations to several residence halls. In 2018-19, they furthered our commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming campus environment by enhancing safety features. Last year, parents and family members assisted in upgrading the furniture around the entrance to the Norton Campus Center, a hub for campus life.
