Academic Distinctions

Prepare for Change

Distinction programs complement and enhance disciplinary majors and minors, and provide students with a concentrated focus on a particular issue or applied area of study. Programs are multi- or trans-disciplinary, include introductory courses and capstone requirements, and incorporate experiential learning. Unless specifically noted, courses used to fulfill distinction program requirements may also fulfill general education and major or minor requirements. Completion of an academic distinction is announced at graduation. BSC offers four academic distinctions: Black Studies, Leadership Studies, Poverty Studies, and Public Health Studies.

Why complete an academic distinction?

  • Enhance professional goals. Prepare yourself for any career or professional trajectory by studying the issues and practices required for effective professional engagement.
  • Analyze experience. Examine your own and others’ lived experiences and how those experiences are shaped by history and context.
  • Integrate learning. Connect your professional goals, personal experiences, and academic knowledge through interdisciplinary study and experiential learning.
  • Collaborate for change. Identify how to build community and act in concert with others to promote positive change.
