Brief Career Background:

Dr. Hurt earned her B.S. in biology from Alcorn State University (2008). She then received her M.S. in biology from Jackson State University (2010) and her Ph.D. in interdisciplinary biomedical sciences from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (2015). Her graduate work focused on the role of UDP-glucuronosyltransferases and cannabinoid receptors in breast and pancreatic cancer. She completed her postdoctoral work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2018) where she investigated the role of annexin 7 isoforms in mediating endocytic downregulation of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) in glioblastoma (GBM) and the mono-allelic loss of NFKBIA in GBM.

Educational Background:

Ph.D. Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, 2015
M.S. Biology, Jackson State University, 2010
B.S. Biology, Alcorn State University, 2008

Research Interests:

Dr. Hurt's research focus is cancer, with emphasis on understanding why certain women specifically African Americans, incur breast cancers that are most difficult to treat, likely metastasize to the brain, and ultimately diminishes both the quality and quantity of life for affected persons.

Courses Taught:

BI 110 Cell and Molecular Biology (1)
An investigation of the fundamental properties of cells. Topics include cell structure and function, energetics and metabolism, gene structure and expression, and the techniques used to study these phenomena. Designed for students who plan to major in biology or one of the natural sciences and/ or who are pre-health. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week.
