Brief Career Background:

Dr. Ann Dominick has over 30 years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher, mathematics coach, and university mathematics and education professor. She was awarded the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Elementary Mathematics, is a former Alabama State Teacher of the Year, and is the 2019 recipient of the UAB Constance Kamii Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching.  Dr. Dominick received her undergraduate degree in education from Auburn University, a Master’s in Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a doctorate from Vanderbilt University, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Curriculum and Instruction at Harvard University. Ann is the co-author of Number Talks: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages which won the 2017 REVERE Golden Lamp awards for Best Subject Area Professional Resource, and Best Mathematics Supplemental Resource. She presents her research at local, state, and national conferences and is passionate about working with administrators, teachers, parents, and the public to improve mathematics education for students.

Courses Taught:

ED 201 Introduction to Education: 
An overview of American education in both public and private settings. Students consider multiple aspects of education, including teaching as a profession, historical foundations of education, philosophical foundations of education, trends and issues in schools and teaching, issues of diversity and multicultural education, and the future of education. In addition, numerous social (quality of life) issues of importance to teachers, students, and society in general are addressed. Laboratory and background clearance are required. 

ED 299 Explorations in Teaching in Elementary Schools
A field-based Explorations-term project that requires observation and participation in classrooms at the elementary level. Specific requirements are listed in the Interim Term Bulletin, which is published every fall.

EPY 320 Educational Psychology:
Theories and practices in human learning to help students develop an understanding of the nature of learning as applied in nursery schools, kindergartens, elementary grades, and high school grades.  Emphasis is placed on the development and implementation of assessment systems and the professional use of standard tests and measures. Laboratory is required.

ED 312 Teaching Mathematics in Primary Grades
A methods course focusing on emergent mathematical concepts for young children. Extensive field experience required. An Experiential and service-learning integrated course.

ED 320 Teaching Mathematics in Grades 3-6
Develops techniques, materials, and methods for teaching mathematics to children in grades 3-6. Attention will be given to teaching children with special needs. Laboratory is required. An Experiential Learning and service-learning integrated course.

ED 324 Teaching Science and Health
Provides teacher candidates with philosophy, content knowledge, techniques, and materials to assist them in the teaching of science and health to students in grades K-6. Attention will be given to teaching children with special needs. Laboratory required. 

ED 410 Internship II
Full-time teaching internship in grade K, 1, 2, or 3 for six weeks under supervision of a certified teacher and a college supervisor. Prerequisites: enrollment in ED 411 and 471 and admission to Teacher Education Program. 

ED 411 Internship III
Full-time teaching internship in grade 4, 5 or 6 for six weeks under the supervision of a certified teacher and a college supervisor. Prerequisites: enrollment in ED 410 and 471 and admission to Teacher Education Program.
