Deadline Explanations

  •

    Early Decision

Early Decision is a binding admission plan for students who have determined that Birmingham-Southern is their first choice.  Students admitted through the Early Decision admission plan are required to cancel their applications elsewhere and enroll in BSC. Students may only apply to one binding early decision institution.  Decisions of admit, defer, or deny will be released by November 16 and students are expected to submit deposits by January 15.  You must submit the Early Decision Agreement Form at time of application to be considered for this decision plan.

  •

    Early Action

Early Action is a non-binding and unrestrictive admission plan that allows a student to apply early and received an admission decision early during their senior year. We aim to release decisions of admit, defer, or deny by December 16. Students admitted through the Early Action admission plan will have until May 1 to reserve a spot by in the incoming class.

  •

    Regular Decision

Regular Decision is a non-binding and unrestrictive admission plan that allows students more time to complete the application. Students will be notified of their admission decisions by March 1. Students admitted through the Regular Decision admission plan will have until May 1 to reserve a spot in the incoming class.

Students are welcome to apply after February 1.  These applications will be reviewed on a space available basis.

What's Test Optional?

We would love to share more information about this with you. Contact us today!

Application Components

  •

    High School Transcript

Your high school transcript or self-reported grades are required for us to review your application. If you have an unofficial copy you can email or upload it to the application portal. Upon enrollment we will need an official transcript showing your graduation date.

  •

    ACT or SAT Test Scores

Want to submit your ACT or SAT test scores as part of your application?  Great, you can email, have sent from the testing agency or upload to your application portal your scores.  Send us all your scores because we will superscore to give you the highest possible test score for scholarship purposes.

Don't have a test score?  No problem, you can apply test optional.  If you apply test optional you will not be disadvantaged in the application or scholarship review processes.

  •

    Essay

An essay as part of your application helps us learn a bit more about who you are and how you organize your thoughts and ideas in writing.  While only required of test optional applicants, we read every essay that is submitted.  Essays should be 250-500 words in length and answer one of the following:

    1.   Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, please share your story.
    2.  The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
    3.  Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
    4.   Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma — anything of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
    5.  Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
    6.  Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

  •

    Academic Letter of Recommendation

You can submit an academic letter of recommendation as part of your application to give the admission committee additional information about you.  Sometimes the admission committee might ask for this, don't panic. Just ask a teacher or counselor to let us know what you could bring to our academic community.

  •

    Interview

    • Sometimes the admission committee will ask you to interview with a member of the admission staff as part of the application process.  The office will notify you if this is a requirement.  Otherwise, our admission staff is available to meet with you to share more about Birmingham-Southern.
