Athletic Department Mission Statement
The Birmingham-Southern College Athletic Department is committed first and
foremost to the health and well being of all its student-athletes. The academic
progress of each student-athlete is the focal point of the coaches and administrators,
with the ultimate goal to help all student-athletes earn their undergraduate degree.
The personal growth of each student-athlete is the next priority of the athletic
department. Birmingham-Southern College athletics strives to develop character,
integrity, and leadership in all student-athletes. As a collegiate student-athlete, good
sportsmanship also plays a vital role in the overall development of student-athletes
and their maturity into productive adult citizens.
Finally, Birmingham-Southern College strives to give every student-athlete a
championship opportunity during his or her collegiate athletic career. Through
excellent coaching, resources, facilities, and conference affiliation, BSC student-
athletes will have the opportunity each year to compete for a conference
championship and participate in NCAA Championship events.
Mission Statement of the College
Birmingham-Southern College provides a liberal arts education of distinctive
quality. The College challenges students to think independently, to examine the arts
and sciences aesthetically and critically, and to communicate clearly. It fosters the
advancement of scholarship, personal and resourceful learning, and comprehensive
advising.
The total educational experience at Birmingham-Southern College focuses on
individual students and their intellectual and ethical development, and offers
opportunities for spiritual and physical well-being. The academic program
challenges students to understand a range of disciplines and requires the in-depth
study of one. The College is distinguished by a dedicated faculty, undergraduate
scholarship and research, Interim Term, leadership studies and service learning,
cross-cultural opportunities, on- and off-campus mentor relationships, and by
graduate education within a liberal arts context.
Birmingham-Southern College operates under the auspices of the Alabama-West
Florida and North Alabama Conferences of the United Methodist Church, with its
most responsible service to the Church being to perform its educational mission
with distinction.
President’s Statement on Intercollegiate Athletics
Birmingham-Southern College has a rich tradition of combining academic and
athletic success. As a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), we are dedicated to the values of pure amateur athletics as an
important complement to a rich education experience. As a member of the Southern
Athletic Association (SAA), we enjoy the benefits of competition with eleven of the
finest national liberal arts colleges from across America.
Our commitment to the concept of the “student-athlete” is unwavering. We offer a
nationally recognized academic program, personal attention, outstanding coaches
and top-notch facilities. Our coaches’ concern for the total development of each
student-athlete that comes to Birmingham-Southern is evident from the first day
