Homecoming 2017

We look forward to welcoming you to the Hilltop for BSC’s Homecoming for family and friends of current students and for alumni. This is a great opportunity to connect with student life on campus and visit with BSC faculty, staff, and students.

Highlights on Friday include the decorating contest and skits, a Shrimp Boil; and our annual Iron Pour. You can also get a taste of ’Southern by hearing a Provost’s Forum, a musical performance by the BSC Gospel Choir, seeing the current theatre production, or visiting the exhibition in the Durbin Gallery.

Saturday’s activities include The Big Tailgate on the Academic Quad before the football game against Sewanee, as well as other academic, athletic, and social events. You’ll find a full schedule below.

    Join us for a special dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony of the Atrium in Norton Campus Center honoring BSC Alumni Pat Courington ’63.

    Staff will be waiting to welcome you and your guest(s). Wristbands will be in your packet at check-in for Friday evening events.

    Provost Forum featuring Dr. Randy Law, Professor of History
    “The Reality and Perception of American Terrorism”
    When it comes to terrorism in the US, there has always been a wide gulf between terrorism as we imagine it to be and terrorism as it actually exists. In this talk, Dr. Randall Law will explore the fascinating double history of terrorism in America.

    Two nobodies decide to write a completely original musical starring themselves in this one-act musical that chronicles its own production.

    Homecoming Decorations Judging, Fraternity Row and other student group locations across campus
    View the annual student tradition of house decorations and musical performances by our student groups while they display their Homecoming spirit in this competition!

    Iron Pour, Academic Quad
    (Adjacent to Party on the Quad/Shrimp Boil)
    Sloss Furnace metal sculptors will set up a small furnace and melt hundreds of pounds of scrap iron. Support the BSC Arts League by purchasing and decorating your own 4 x 4 sand mold and watch as molten ore is poured to create your personal iron art. Sand blocks are available for purchase on site and can be taken home that evening. Enjoy music by the Herb Trotman Band.

    BSC Party on the Quad/Shrimp Boil, Academic Quad
    Pre-register for the Shrimp Boil
    Don’t miss the Shrimp Boil with a special welcome by President Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith! Enjoy great food, the Iron Pour, live music, yard games and a cash bar. Wristbands will be in your welcome packet if you pre-registered! Everyone is invited to attend the Party on the Quad, however food will be available ONLY to registered guests with a wristband, and cannot be purchased on-site.

    Coke products will be available at the Coca Cola Event Trailer thanks to a generous sponsorship by Birmingham-Coca Cola Bottling Company.

    • Vegetarian and gluten-free options are part of the Shrimp Boil menu.
    • Unregistered guests/students are welcome! Just bring a picnic and a blanket to enjoy the music.
    • RAIN PLAN: In inclement weather, we will have carryout service and seating in the Norton Atrium.
    • A special table will be reserved for the Class of 1967 who are celebrating their 50 Year Reunion!

    Staff will be waiting to welcome you and your guest(s). If you checked in on Friday, please wear your Saturday wristband and just head to the activities! If you haven’t checked in, please stop by the Norton Atrium when you arrive on campus. Check-in will relocate to the Academic Quad at noon.
    Coffee will be available at check-in; please enjoy breakfast on your own off campus or in the BSC Caf.

    Take a moment to remember our BSC alums and friends.

    Individual Appointments with Faculty
    Individual appointments for parents scheduled in advance through the Provost’s Office will occur during this time.  If you need an individual appointment with faculty, please use the following link to make a request: Academic Appointment Request Form.  For questions, contact Charlotte McLendon in the Provost’s Office, at 205-226-4650.  Appointment times are limited and may fill quickly.   The deadline to request an individual appointment is Tuesday, October 10, 2017. 

    Many of our faculty will be on the Academic Quad during The Big Tailgate to visit with current and former students and their families.

    Parents, students and alumni are invited to join us for “The Big Tailgate.” 

    Wristbands will be in your welcome packet if you pre-registered!  If you brought an additional guest that isn’t registered, wristbands for the tailgate may be purchased for $15 at the Academic Quad Tailgate entrance or in the Atrium during check-in hours.  All current BSC students are free courtesy of Quest II, but must check-in on the Quad to receive a wristband for The Big Tailgate. 

    • Enjoy Jim ‘N’ Nicks BBQ Nachos (chicken/pork) or a vegetarian option (if requested on-line in advance), with your student and other families before the big game!  Coke products will be available at the Coca Cola Event Trailer thanks to a generous sponsorship by Birmingham-Coca Cola Bottling Company.
    • Mix and mingle with alums, faculty and staff.  A special tent will be set up so you can talk with many of our faculty.
    • Capture a special photo with your family and friends at the photo booth.
    • A special KidZone will be available for our little ones to enjoy on the Quad.  Activities include face painting, balloons and yard games.
    • Cheer on the BSC Football Team during our second annual Panther Walk.
    • Following the Tailgate, enjoy the game and Homecoming half-time festivities with other families and alumni.
