The Burleson Scholarship

The Burleson Scholarship will support two full scholarships covering tuition and mandatory fees, plus half of room and board, for the 2018-2019 academic year. Eligible recipients will be rising juniors and seniors who are majoring in disciplines that will prepare them for medical school, and must have demonstrated financial need as determined by the BSC Office of Financial Aid.

A Birmingham native and a member of the BSC Class of 1938, Dr. Burleson began his medical education at the Medical College of Alabama, later graduating from George Washington University in 1942. He received advanced training at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine and after returning to Birmingham, he established a practice in internal medicine that would span four decades. Beginning in 1951, he served on the UAB School of Medicine faculty for 35 years as an internal medicine specialist until his retirement in 1986. Dr. Burleson and his wife, the late Martha R. Burleson, made established a foundation to support students as they prepare for medical careers.
