Birmingham-Southern College’s production of “35mm: A Musical Exhibition” opens March 12 and runs through March 15. The show brings musical theatre, photography, and pop/rock music together, with lyrics and music by Ryan Scott Oliver and inspired by the photography of Matthew Murphy, Oliver’s husband and collaborator.

Senior BSC theatre major Matthew Torbett will direct the production, starring Jackie Lamars, Aislinn Cain, Luke Otwell, Annie Norris, and Camp Shelor. Torbett first listened to the musical’s soundtrack in high school and then saw a London production in 2017.

“I fell in love with the concept for the show. It’s all music inspired by photography, or photography inspired by music,” Torbett said in an Iron City Ink feature on the show.

Professor of Theatre Michael Flowers serves as the show’s faculty mentor. Flowers has been a member of the BSC theatre faculty since 1984, and he directs productions for the College Theatre and for local theatres around Birmingham.

In November, Torbett starred in BSC’s production of “Falsettos.” He also hosted an on-campus fashion show and exhibition that he designed and directed in the fall. The show and the mini-collection he created were part of his Harrison Honors Program research on the camp movement. Read more about his project here.

“35mm” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. March 12, 13, and 14 and at 2:30 p.m. March 15 in the College Theatre Underground. Tickets are $10. Reserve tickets by calling the Theatre Box Office at (205) 226-4780 or going online. Box Office hours are 1-4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.
