Greek Songs

According to folklorist Simon Bronner, Greek organizations use songs for various purposes: to welcome, to serenade, to congratulate, and to distinguish themselves from other organizations. Bronner suggests that sororities tend to use songs more formally than fraternities; for example, certain kinds of singing are reserved for certain nights of the week for many sororities. Fraternities, meanwhile, are more spontaneous, and their songs are more likely to be risqué or parodic. Above all, Bronner notes, “Greeks especially use singing to showcase their many voices singing as one. Their shared knowledge of songs points to their shared cultural bond; it is a form of ritual communication and release” (138-140).
