Michelangelo made it look easy, but how many people give any real thought to the process of creating paints and pigments? Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Scott Dorman taught students the lost art of how to chemically mix their own paint in his Exploration Term course “Paint, Glaze, Ink.” In the classroom, students studied the philosophy, history, and chemistry of paints, pigments, dyes, and binders used to create art. In the laboratory, they examined the molecular interactions involved in procedures artists perform and compared the atomic structure of metals, glasses, and clays.
It’s just one of hundreds of options for Birmingham-Southern students during E-Term, a special four-week class session held every January. It’s a chance to travel, do an internship, work on research or a creative project, dig deep into a topic or take on something totally new. Click on the video to learn more.
