7) Killdeer

The Killdeer is a bird of the short, open grasslands. Sometimes you may find it in the fields of the EcoScape. It makes its nest in a small depression on the ground. It is very easy to step on the eggs and young when they are nesting there, and the adult bird is hardly noticeable for it blends into the surrounding environment. When disturbed, the adults will go through the broken wing bit by acting wounded and trying to detract the attention of a predator.

The Killdeer feeds primarily on insects and other invertebrates. Usually, it will run along the ground just in front of you rather than taking in flight. When pressed too hard, it will take wing and fly well out of harm's way.
