Student Employment
Birmingham-Southern College offers two student employment programs that provide work opportunities for students: the Federal College Work-Study Program (FCWSP) and the Birmingham-Southern College Work-Study Program (BSCWS).
The rate of pay for both programs starts at $7.00 per hour. To determine the number of hours one can work per week to earn the full award, divide the eligibility amount (amount from your award letter) by the wage (dollars per hour). This will give you the total number of hours per term you can work. Students should earn only the amount stipulated on the award letter.
To qualify for the Federal College Work-Study Program, which is a need-based program and partially supported by federal funding, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibility. If a student is eligible, the Office of Financial Aid Services determines the amount of work-study. Not all students receiving need-based financial aid qualify for federal work-study.
Birmingham-Southern College Work-Study is fully funded by the College and is not need based - students need not be receiving federal financial aid to work under this program. Normally BSCWS is awarded to students at the request of a faculty or staff member to fill positions such as teaching assistants, science lab assistants, lifeguards, etc. Funds are limited.
How to Apply for a Job
If you have not been awarded either of the two work-study programs and you are interested in working on campus, complete the Student Employment Application Form and submit it to Student Financial Aid Services. If openings become available, they will be filled on a "first come-first serve" basis for students who meet the qualifications for that position.
In the event you are placed in an on-campus job, you must complete additional required forms for student payroll. The Financial Aid Office will provide these forms to you.
- Student Employment/Pay Authorization Form
- Federal Withholding Form
- State Withholding Form
- Immigration Form (I-9)
- New Hire Form (Students who have previously worked on campus must complete a new Student Employment/Pay Authorization form each year.)
- Completion of the I-9 (requires picture identification such as a driver's license and proof of work eligibility such as your Social Security Card or birth certificate. A United States passport satisfies both requirements. You must bring originals of these documents AND copies for your file.)
Unless otherwise specified, period of enrollment is September – May. The pay rate for all positions start at $7.00 per hour
