Hilltop Photo of the Week

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” webpage and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week.

The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at pcole@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved.

“Yeast” science—Some Birmingham-Southern students and faculty members recently attended a forum in Atlanta where basic scientific research topics related to yeast are shared. Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Melanie Styers and Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Pam Hanson accompanied five biology students to the 2012 Southeast Regional Yeast Meeting at Emory University Feb. 24-26. From left to right are Sarah Sharman, Amy Banks, Alan Eckler, Ben Perrin, and Matt Barnes, who all presented posters. The meeting was attended by professors, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduates from schools that included Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Duke, University of Florida, Hendrix, Augusta State, UAB, and many others. “The students' posters were very well received,” remarked Styers. “Some of the students were even asked when they would be finishing graduate school—not bad for an undergraduate student!” Funding for this opportunity was provided by the college’s Student Government Association and Provost's Office. Additionally, Eckler was awarded a National Science Foundation Travel Award for the meeting.
