Hilltop Photo of the Week
Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the
Week” webpage and archives. Each week at this site, we'll
feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus,
along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo
of the Week.
The college welcomes submissions to be considered
for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can
be e-mailed to the
Office of Communications at pcole@bsc.edu, or photographic prints
may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions
to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure
to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location
and people involved.

Partnership abroad—Service-learning travel projects, an important component of a Birmingham-Southern education, allow students to come face-to-face with various social issues in national and international communities. A group of 24 BSC students, faculty, and staff will partner with the Amekor Foundation in Avedo, Ghana, Africa, during the college's 2012 Exploration Term in January. BSC's Bunting Center for Engaged Study and Community Action will sponsor the service-learning project, which will focus on teaching English to the children in Avedo. John Rogers '04, executive director and co-founder of the foundation, has established relationships with the people of Avedo and with teachers at the school. Pictured (from left) during the Ghana team’s recent visit to campus are Kristin Harper ’92, director of the Bunting Center; Ben Nutsukpoi of Ghana; Rogers; Torri Morris, Amekor Foundation international volunteer, who teaches at the school in Avedo; and Yao Amekor, board president and co-founder of the foundation, who is a native of Ghana. BSC education faculty Dr. Amelia Spencer '85 and Dr. Louanne Jacobs will accompany the students to Ghana and are working on a specially designed curriculum for the schoolchildren in Avedo, who are ages 5-12. The Amekor Foundation is a nonprofit which seeks to develop resources and programming to make sure the children of rural Ghana have access to a good education. The foundation was inspired by the life of Amekor, who overcame daunting obstacles in his village to earn two master’s degrees, including an MBA from Washington University.
