Hilltop Photo of the Week
Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the
Week” webpage and archives. Each week at this site, we'll
feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus,
along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo
of the Week.
The college welcomes submissions to be considered
for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can
be e-mailed to the
Office of Communications at pcole@bsc.edu, or photographic prints
may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions
to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure
to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location
and people involved.

'Life science' lab—Birmingham-Southern biology major Lauren Metzger of Mobile is taking advantage of summer's slower pace by engaging in crayfish studies as part of her senior research project. Under the guidance of Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Megan Gibbons, she is trapping and removing the invasive crayfish, Orconectes virilis, from five different sites in nearby Roebuck Springs. "I'm bringing the crayfish back to the campus lab and taking three different measurements to determine the size and sex, while keeping them separated based on which site they were collected from," she explained. "Overall, we are trying to see if we can have an effect on the crayfish population size by decreasing the number of invasive species. They are killing the watercress darter, which is endangered, and also the native crayfish, Cambarus striatus." Another part of Metzger's project—measuring the force of the crayfish's claws to see if it correlates with their size—is being studied in the lab of Professor of Biology Dr. Andy Gannon (pictured in background).
