BSC Photo of the Week

Hilltop Photo of the Week

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” webpage and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week.

The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at pcole@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved.

Hands-on encounter with nature—With flashlights in hand, three brave students of Dr. Scot Duncan and Dr. Peter Van Zandt's Biology 101 class at Birmingham-Southern ventured into one of the caves at the local Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve. Pictured above (from left to right) are Haley Ingrum, a freshman business major from Hoover; Joanna Carter, a sophomore dance major from Vestavia; and Alex Bothe, a freshman psychology major from Seguin, Texas. While inside the cave, they came across individuals of two species of salamanders: a slimy salamander (Plethodon glutinosus), and a cave salamander (Eurycea lucifuga). The class (shown in its entirety below) visited the preserve March 3 to study the geological aspects of the mountain as well as the ecosystems the area supports.
