Hilltop Photo of the Week
Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the
Week” webpage and archives. Each week at this site, we'll
feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus,
along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo
of the Week.
The college welcomes submissions to be considered
for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can
be e-mailed to the
Office of Communications at pcole@bsc.edu, or photographic prints
may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions
to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure
to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location
and people involved.

He reigns—He has charm, grace, talent, and personality. He is Mr. Hilltopper. Maulin Shah, a freshman biology major and Theta Chi fraternity member from Brentwood, Tenn., poses with the sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority after winning the title Nov. 1. This is the 70th year for Mr. Hilltopper, the oldest philanthropy event on the campus. The annual pageant is hosted by AOP to help raise money for juvenile arthritis research. This year's theme was "Honky Tonk on the Hilltop." Each fraternity and sorority at BSC picks a male representative to compete for the prestigious title. The competition is made up of three parts: the walk and "about me" segment, talent portion (where the Greek organizations make up a dance and perform with their contestant), and the on-stage interview. A "sexy legs" winner also was announced at the pageant with this year's honor going to Sigma Nu's Ford McClure, a freshman from Atlanta. The pageant has raised more than $2,000 for juvenile arthritis with donations still coming in.

Global leadership—Sarah McCune, a junior English major at Birmingham-Southern, received the Dorothy G. Baker Campus Leadership Award during the Birmingham United Nations Day Banquet held recently on campus. A Bozeman, Mont., native, she was honored for her interfaith work as a BSC Hess Fellow this past summer when she interned at the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in New York City. McCune spent 10 weeks working to create a North American youth network so the U.S., Mexico, and Canada can have regional representation within the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. She also sat in on U.N. committee meetings and helped with the pending launch of the U.N.'s International Year of Youth campaign. The Hess Fellows program at Birmingham-Southern provides paid summer internships for up to 13 BSC students each year to travel and to develop an understanding of public policy-making. McCune is pictured with Baker, for whom the award is named, a founding board member and former president of the local chapter of the United Nations.
