Hilltop Photo of the Week

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” webpage and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week.

The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at pcole@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved.

Teaching and learning—A summer program that offers youth from West Birmingham a chance to learn financial management and computer skills as well as enjoy activities like swimming and basketball drew another large group of participants this year. Camp NorthStar is a six-week educational enrichment program held during June and July. The camp primarily serves low- to moderate-income students whose families can't afford to send them to higher-priced summer programs. This year's camp took place at Birmingham-Southern with an enrollment of 165 kids from kindergarten through 10th grade. Daily activities at the camp began at 8 a.m. and included many other endeavors like reading, science (including trips to the McWane Science Center), moral development (NorthStar Bible Camp), fitness, gardening, art, and career direction. The camp's counselors (in blue shirts) were volunteers from several local colleges including BSC, Samford University, and UAB. The mission of NorthStar Youth Ministries, directed by Paul Neville (MPPM '07), is to help urban youth find their direction in life through high-quality, holistic programs within a nurturing Christian environment.
