Hilltop Photo of the Week

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” webpage and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week.

The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at pcole@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved.

Fish Survey—Biology students enrolled in the Summer Term at Birmingham-Southern got a little wet and dirty recently by going into the Little Cahaba River near Mountain Brook to seine for fish. The course is listed as BI 101 and is taught by BSC Adjunct Professor of Biology Dr. Lori Tolley-Jordan. The students identified fish that were collected in the seine net as a laboratory exercise. The shallow water and fast currents of the Cahaba River serve as a nursery for a variety of fish species. "This was a fieldtrip to learn about diversity in Alabama in 'our own backyard,'" explained Tolley-Jordan. "Alabama ranks No. 1 for fish diversity, and the Cahaba River basin has the highest diversity of any river in the state."
