Hilltop Photo of the Week
Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the
Week” Web page and archives. Each week at this site, we'll
feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus,
along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo
of the Week.
The college welcomes submissions to be considered
for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can
be e-mailed to the
Office of Communications at pcole@bsc.edu, or photographic prints
may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions
to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure
to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location
and people involved.

Poised to serve—With the monthlong January Interim Term now in full swing at Birmingham-Southern, many students have found service-learning and community outreach opportunities that address national and global issues. Here, from left: Sarah Parkinson, Kelly Gronemeyer, Helen Marchman, Katie Adams, Mike Popwell, and Brooke Hand chop up celery and assist with food preparation at the DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C. The nonprofit recycles food from around the D.C. area and not only feeds those who are less fortunate, but also trains them with the valuable skills needed for them to start a career in food and help themselves. The students are volunteering as part of an Interim course called “Advocacy and Service in D.C.: Bridging the Gap Between Promise and Reality.” Led by BSC Instructor of English Kent Andersen and Sarah Doughton, assistant director of the college's Bunting Center for Engaged Study and Community Action, the travel course is helping students become more aware of homelessness, poverty, and community responsibility. BSC's Interim service-learning projects have taken teams to communities all over the nation and world.
