BSC Photo of the Week

Hilltop Photo of the Week

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” web page and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week.

The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at bwagnon@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved.

Student activities for first-year experience—A group of first-year students who are all majoring in theatre at Birmingham-Southern climbed to Peavine Falls in Oak Mountain State Park Aug. 31 as part of a CONNECT fall orientation activity. Pictured on far right in photo above is Michael Flowers, professor of theatre and chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at BSC. In its third year now, the CONNECT program is designed to clearly articulate the goals of a BSC education and help first-year students recognize connections between and across disciplines using the language and goals of the college's Foundations curriculum. Other first-year students at Birmingham-Southern spent their first weekend away from home serving and learning from their neighbors in the West End community for Fall Outreach Day. Below, sophomore Matt Kelly, who is a Bunting Center student liaison for Northstar Youth Ministries, and freshman Kelsie Overton apply paint to a wall inside the Northstar facility. The BSC Bunting Center for Engaged Study and Community Action hosts the outreach day each year to introduce first-year BSC students to their neighborhood and expose them to the experiential component of service learning. The college kicked off its 2009-10 academic year Sept. 2.
