BSC Photo of the Week

Hilltop Photo of the Week

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” web page and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week.

The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at bwagnon@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved.

Visiting a geological gem—A group of seven students enrolled in the Biology 410 and 472 courses at Birmingham-Southern are spending a part of their summer researching the scientific side of Costa Rica. Some of the students are helping Dr. Megan Gibbons, BSC associate professor of biology, and Dr. Peter Van Zandt, BSC visiting assistant professor of biology, conduct tropical ecology research, while seniors are conducting their capstone research projects (required for Biology 472) at La Selva Biological Research Station. Pictured during a sightseeing adventure in front of the Aranol Volcano in Costa Rica—one of the few volcanoes in the world that is constantly active—are (from left) juniors Lexi Sack and Wil Gilmore, senior Kelly Gronemeyer, and juniors Daniel Osula and Zac Napier. The students and professors will return from their research in Costa Rica July 10. The results of several of these projects will be sent to national journals for publication or presented at national or regional meetings, as have projects from previous years, according to Van Zandt.
