Hilltop Photo of the Week
Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the
Week” web page and archives. Each week at this site, we'll
feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus,
along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo
of the Week.
The college welcomes submissions to be considered
for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can
be e-mailed to the
Office of Communications at bwagnon@bsc.edu, or photographic prints
may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions
to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure
to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location
and people involved.

Onstage proposal—Birmingham-Southern senior business major Kelley McGahey received a marriage proposal from longtime beau Daniel Jordan during the recent SoCo nighttime entertainment event on campus. Jordan, a graduate of the University of West Alabama, had arranged to present a “door prize” and took the microphone right before the last band, Galactica, performed as McGahey was ushered on stage. “We have been dating for more than five years and, yet, I had no idea,” McGahey commented. “And I had sprained my ankle just a few hours before!” SoCo has been a springtime tradition at BSC since 1982 and is sponsored by Quest II and the Student Government Association.

A huge day for honors—Top student scholars and outstanding faculty members were recognized at Birmingham-Southern's 2009 Honors Day program April 23. The program kicked off with a Convocation address by Susan Shelton '93 (center), corporate counsel of Hearst-Argyle Television Inc. in New York City. Shelton, a summa cum laude international business graduate of BSC, spoke on the topic “A Life Worth Living” about her experiences in college and the path that led her to her current job. With Shelton are BSC President Dr. David Pollick (on left) and Dr. Wayne Shew, interim provost and Ada Rittenhouse Snavely Professor of Biology. A native of Birmingham, Shelton is the daughter of BSC Professor Emeritus of Art Bob Shelton, who teaches as an adjunct professor.
Honors Day is an important prelude to Commencement. The annual event includes a processional of graduating seniors and faculty in cap and gown to the Convocation, followed by lunch and afternoon demonstrations of scholarship and creative works by students and faculty.
