Hilltop Photo of the WeekWelcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” web page and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week. The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at bwagnon@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved. Fire on the mountain—Under the direction of the Pelham Fire Department and several local and state environmental agencies, Birmingham-Southern Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Scot Duncan and 16 students in his Biology 411 General Ecology class witnessed and studied a prescribed burn at Oak Mountain State Park Nov. 20. The planned burn—based on the park's Wildland Fire Plan—was the start of an ecological restoration project designed to help restore the health of the longleaf pine forest, which is a type of forest that depends on periodic fire for its survival. According to Duncan, this area of forest has not been burned in many decades, and the health of the longleaf pine forest has been in decline. BSC students, who have studied the forest for the past month, have measured fuel loads, soil conditions, and vegetation. They've also conducted experiments to see if the fire can be manipulated to better benefit the longleaf pine forest. The students will return to the site after Thanksgiving to examine the results of the fire. |
