Hilltop Photo of the WeekWelcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” web page and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week. The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at bwagnon@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved. Summer in Costa Rica—Some Birmingham-Southern faculty members and students are getting the experience of trekking through humid rainforests as they study and do research in Costa Rica this summer. Dr. Megan Gibbons, associate professor of biology, and Dr. Pete Van Zandt, visiting professor of biology, took five students to Central America in mid-June for eight weeks of tropical ecology research. “The students are assisting Pete and I in our research projects, while also conducting their own projects,” says Gibbons. “They have the option of earning BI 393 Independent Study academic credit for their research.” Pictured at a dried up swamp in a lowland tropical rainforest in the Sarapiqui region of Costa Rica are (from left) Thiago Queiroz, Ron MacBeth, Rebekah Pine, Gibbons, Kimmie Farris, and Scott Shashy.
