Hilltop Photo of the Week

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” web page and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week.

The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at bwagnon@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved.

Cross-cultural lesson in leadership—Twenty-four specially selected high school students from 11 states broke into small groups to play Barnga as part of the annual Student Leaders in Service summer program held this past June on the Birmingham-Southern campus. Barnga is similar to Spades or Hearts, but the exact rules of play for each group are slightly different. The game challenges participants to examine the assumptions, beliefs, attitudes, and subsequent actions we make when we limit our options for communication and interaction with others. Student Leaders in Service is a weeklong residential program that exposes rising high school seniors to leadership and service through theory and practice. The students put their leadership skills to use in various service projects benefiting the Birmingham community. Sara Doughton, assistant director of the Bunting Center for Engaged Study and Community Action at BSC, led the activities.
