BSC Photo of the Week

Hilltop Photo of the Week

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern's “Hilltop Photo of the Week” web page and archives. Each week at this site, we'll feature a photo that depicts some aspect of life on the Hilltop campus, along with brief information about what is taking place in the Photo of the Week.

The college welcomes submissions to be considered for the Hilltop Photo of the Week. Scanned or digital photos can be e-mailed to the Office of Communications at bwagnon@bsc.edu, or photographic prints may be sent through campus mail to Box 549004. Please limit photo submissions to those that depict some aspect of the BSC experience, and be sure to identify what is taking place in the photo, along with location and people involved.

Interim galore—Birmingham-Southern students took in a world of experiences during the January Interim term. One group viewed familiar landmarks in London and Paris by some of the grand masters of architecture. Led by BSC art history professors Dr. Kathleen Spies and Dr. Timothy Smith, the travel-study project “A Tale of Two Cities: The Museums and Monuments of London and Paris” gave students a chance to visit such sites as the British Museum and Westminster Abbey in London as well as the Louvre Museum and Sainte Chapelle in Paris. Above, students pose at I.M. Pei's Pyramid at the Louvre. Another local Interim course allowed students to examine the Portland, Oregon, model of urban planning to help make BSC a more sustainable campus and to create a set of practical recommendations for improving the college and community's carbon footprint. “Birmingham: Portland of the South?” was led by Roald Hazelhoff, director of the Southern Environmental Center at BSC, and Elizabeth Blum, BSC director of interim and contract learning. In the photo below, students listen as Jones Valley Urban Farm Director Edwin Marty (far right) plays some downright funky music on a recycled pipe instrument. Located in Birmingham, the farm is a model sustainable education facility. The most distinctive part of a BSC education, Interim allows students to explore their creative interests through on- and off-campus projects, independent study or research, group and individual study-travel experiences, or internships.
