BSC Concert Choir's East Coast tour begins March 13 in Alexandria, Va.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern College Concert Choir will travel through Virginia and into D.C. on its 2014 Spring Tour this month.

BSC Concert Choir's East Coast tour begins March 13 in Alexandria, Va.

The choir will begin its annual tour with a performance on Thursday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Christ Church in Alexandria, Va.

Other 2014 spring tour dates include:

  • March 14: Washington National Cathedral, National Cathedral School Chapel Service, Mount St. Alban, D.C., 8:45 a.m.; Vinson Hall for American Military Veterans, McLean, Va., 7 p.m. (with BSC President Gen. Charles C. Krulak speaking)
  • March 15: World War II Memorial Centennial Plaza, D.C., 10:30 a.m.; National Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle, Va., 2 p.m.
  • March 16: New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, D.C., 11 a.m. Worship Service

The tour will conclude with a Homecoming performance on Sunday, March 30 at 4 p.m. at Bluff Park United Methodist Church in Hoover, Ala.

The concerts are open to the public and admission is free.

Two major choral works on the choir's program are Aaron Copland's In The Beginning, and Bach's motet Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf. Shorter works, all drawn from various American traditional and classical composers, range from works by Williametta Spencer and Robert A. Harris to Dolly Parton. The BSC Hilltop Singers will also perform at schools in the area. 

The 34-voice undergraduate ensemble is led by Dr. Lester Seigel, Joseph Hugh Thomas Professor of Music.The choir will be joined by new BSC faculty member Dr. Leon Couch III as organist.
