Birmingham-Southern soccer stadium named after major donor John Berylson

BIRMINGHAM, ALA.—The soccer stadium on campus has been named the Berylson Soccer Park, Birmingham-Southern officials recently announced.

The naming recognizes a generous donor to the college—one whose recent $1 million donation contributed to scholarships, faculty salaries, and general operating expenses at BSC.

"We are extremely grateful to John Berylson for his support of the college," said Gen. Charles C. Krulak, BSC's president. "It is appropriate that this stadium, where our soccer student-athletes have such great opportunities to grow and develop their skills, bear the name of someone who has donated so much to Birmingham-Southern's success."

Berylson, the chair and CEO of Chestnut Hill Ventures in Wellesley Hills, Ma., is also a soccer fan and the chair of London's professional Millwall Football Club. He has long been a strong supporter of higher education. He was so impressed by BSC's campus, students, and faculty during visits that he decided to make an investment this year.

"It was unlike anything I've seen—everyone I met there just showed incredible enthusiasm for what they do," Berylson said. "It's such a great institution, with great leadership, and I'm happy to be a part of it."

He and his wife and children are trustees of the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation, which gives an estimated $10 million a year in grants dedicated to promoting better health, educational opportunities, and economic mobility for residents of the Greater Boston area.

Berylson will be on campus Thursday, Nov. 14, to attend the unveiling of the new Berylson Soccer Park scoreboard from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
