BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Danielle Rucker, who graduated from Birmingham-Southern May 18 with a degree in economics, was recently awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship from August 2013 to June 2014.
Rucker will assist English teachers of a non-native English background in Yilan, Taiwan. She will spend at least 30 hours per week in the classroom teaching and organizing language-related activities.
“I feel so fortunate to have received this amazing opportunity to teach abroad,” said Rucker, a native of Nashville, Tenn. “I’m also excited to be able to become immersed in the Taiwanese culture while exposing students to a bit of American culture.”
This will not be Rucker’s first time overseas. She studied abroad for a semester during her sophomore year at Hong Kong Baptist University.
Rucker said she chose to teach in Taiwan to advance the Chinese language skills she acquired both in Hong Kong and from her BSC coursework. In her Fulbright essay, she wrote about her previous study-abroad experience in Asia.
This summer, Rucker plans to work on her Mandarin Chinese language skills and prepare for the graduate school entrance exam. One she returns from Taiwan to pursue a graduate degree, she is not sure exactly what path her life will take.
“Teaching is not my first passion,” she said. “But who knows? After my year in Taiwan, that could all change.”
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the highly selective, merit-based Fulbright scholarship provides funds to seniors and graduate students who plan to conduct research, teach, or exercise other talents abroad. Some 5,000 applicants competed for these awards for the 2012-13 year.
