Birmingham-Southern College announces it will not raise tuition in 2013-2014 academic year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College will not raise tuition or mandatory fees for current or incoming students in the 2013-2014 academic year, officials at the college announced Tuesday, Dec. 18.

The move goes against a nationwide trend of skyrocketing tuition costs that make it more difficult each year for students to get a quality college education. BSC's President, Gen. Charles C. Krulak, said that he has long been concerned about the challenges of paying for college in difficult economic times.

"I speak on a daily basis with students and parents who bring that dilemma home to me in very concrete and sometimes heartbreaking ways. Put simply, these conversations raise concerns that cannot be ignored," Gen. Krulak said. "The Board of Trustees and I want to make it possible for our current and prospective students to benefit from the extraordinary education BSC offers without the worry of a hike in tuition and fees next year."

According to The College Board, tuition and fees for private, four-year colleges nationwide have increased by an average of 13 percent over the past five years. Tuition and fees at public, four-year universities have increased 27 percent over the same period.

"BSC already provides a transformative education that you cannot put a price tag on," said Gen. Krulak. "Our commitment is to make that educational experience available to as many students as we can—and holding tuition and fees flat for the next academic year is an important part of the plan."

Birmingham-Southern's next academic year will begin in August of 2013
