Birmingham-Southern College celebrates International Education Week Nov. 12-16

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College is hosting a week of activities, Nov 12-16, to highlight the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

"For our campus community, International Education Week (IEW) is a time to honor all cultures represented in our community, to participate in projects that inspire us to think beyond ourselves, and to educate students about the extraordinary opportunities to engage with the global community through study, internships, service, research, performance, and work," said Anne Ledvina, associate director of the Sklenar Center for International Programs at BSC.

IEW is co-sponsored by the college’s Multicultural Advisory Committee and the Sklenar Center, and is a joint initiative designed by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State to encourage educational institutions to focus on international education. The week’s activities are designed to educate attendees as well as to reflect on the diversity of students from countries around the world. All events are open to the public.

The events planned are as follows:

  • Monday, Nov. 12— International Photo Contest Display and Voting, 10 a.m., Norton Atrium. Students, staff, and faculty can participate.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 13—Study Abroad Fair, 10 a.m. to noon, Norton Atrium. Students can consider study, internship, and research opportunities abroad as part of their BSC degrees.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 14—International Project Display, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Norton Atrium. View the international projects by BSC students, faculty, and staff. Later on that day will be an International Bazaar, 5-7 p.m., Bruno Great Hall. This family-friendly event will feature tents and table displays of all sorts of global groups with activities, performances, and foods for attendees to taste the richness of the international community.
