Birmingham-Southern College to host "Celebration of Champions" to honor 2012 SCAC conference champions and NCAA tournament teams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College is hosting a "Celebration of Champions" Tuesday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum to recognize the three Panther teams that captured Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships this past weekend.

BSC's men's lacrosse, men's baseball, and women's softball teams all captured SCAC Championships and will receive the conference's automatic berths to the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The college also will honor the BSC men's basketball team for competing in the college's first-ever NCAA Division III post-season tournament in March, as well as the 14 Panther track and field athletes who won SCAC Championships this past weekend in the conference meet at BSC's Panther Stadium.

The men's lacrosse team defeated Colorado College 8-5 Sunday in Panther Stadium on campus to win the SCAC Lacrosse Championship. The team improved to 14-4 on the season under the direction of head coach Andy Bonasera. The Panthers begin NCAA Tournament play May 9.

The No. 9 ranked men's baseball team beat Millsaps College 21-4 on Sunday in Millington, Tenn., to take the SCAC Baseball Championship. The Panthers, under the direction of head coach Jan Weisberg, are now 35-7 and begin NCAA regional play May 16.

Coach Kimball Cassady's women's softball team defeated Trinity University twice on Sunday in Jackson, Tenn., to capture SCAC Softball Championship. The team is 34-9 on the season and begins NCAA regional play May 10.

The players and coaches on all three championship teams will be recognized during the Celebration of Champions and presented their SCAC Championship trophies.

Also over the weekend, the BSC men's and women's golf teams both finished second in their respective SCAC Championship competitions. The Birmingham-Southern men's track and field team finished second in the SCAC Championships.
