Birmingham-Southern College Theatre to present rock musical 'Rent'
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern Department of Theatre will conclude its 2011-12 season with its first-ever production of Jonathan Larson's award-winning Broadway rock musical "Rent."
Cast members of Birmingham-Southern College’s theatre production of “Rent” rehearse a scene from the award-winning Broadway rock musical to be performed April 26-29 on the College Theatre/Mainstage. The legendary musical opens April 26 at 7:30 p.m. Performances also will be presented April 27-28 at 7:30 p.m. and April 29 at 2:30 p.m.
Based loosely on Puccini's opera La Boheme and set in the East Village of New York City in the early 1990s, "Rent" is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, "Rent" has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
The two-and-a-half-hour production is being directed by Michael Flowers, BSC professor of theatre, who is working with a company of 41 students—almost equally divided between cast and crew.
General tickets are $20; students can get in for $10 (regardless of school). For tickets, order online at http://www.bsc.edu/events/index.cfm, visit the BSC Theatre Box Office Monday through Friday from 1 to 4:45 p.m., or call 205/226-4780.
