Birmingham-Southern student group to host Chinese New Year Celebration on campus

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College’s Love Asia student organization will host its 2nd annual Chinese New Year Celebration Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Bruno Great Hall of the Norton Campus Center, featuring authentic Chinese food, cultural activities, and performances.

Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China. Performances celebrating the Year of the Dragon will include the BSC martial arts team, Chinese poetry reading, Tai Chi Kung Fu Fan martial arts/dance, Taiji martial arts master Daniel Tan, and a Mongolian dance team. Featured activities are calligraphy writing, paper cuts, a chopsticks game, and more. 

Local students of the Birmingham Chinese School also will perform during the public event. The Chinese Studies Department of UAB and Samford University’s International Club will be involved as well. The event is geared toward families and anyone interested in Chinese cultural education. Admission is $6 per person at the door and includes a dinner meal combo from Mr. Chen’s Authentic Chinese Cooking.
