News from the HilltopFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Birmingham-Southern College math team places third in regional competitionBIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The inaugural Birmingham-Southern College Math Jeopardy Team finished third overall in a competition held in association with the Mathematical Association of America Southeastern Section meeting in Tuscaloosa April 1-2. Thirty-two college and university teams from throughout the Southeastern region competed in the math problem-solving event. The BSC team beat Davidson College and Furman University in the semifinals, before falling in the final round. Members of Birmingham-Southern’s bronze medal-winning team were Steven Carter, a junior mathematics and physics double major from Enterprise and the son of William and Angela Carter; Tianran “TR” Geng, a junior mathematics major from Shanghai, China, and the son of Huilan Wang and Xiaohong Geng; Michael Stonewall, a senior mathematics major from Fairfield and the son of Clinton and Marie Stonewall; and Nino Yu Tiamco, a sophomore mathematics major from Boaz and the son of Ronald and Eden Yu Tiamco. The team was sponsored by Anne Yust, BSC assistant professor of mathematics. |
