Birmingham-Southern College Habitat for Humanity chapter receives State Farm grant

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The student chapter of Habitat for Humanity at Birmingham-Southern College has been selected to receive a 2010-11 State Farm Insurance $2,000 matching grant for its outstanding work in building safe, decent, and affordable homes.

With this matching grant, State Farm challenges the recipients to raise an amount equal to the grant before May 15, 2011, and to donate it to their affiliate chapter to receive the matching funds. BSC is partnered with the local affiliate, Habitat Birmingham.

The Birmingham-Southern Habitat for Humanity chapter is led by Swaroop Vitta, a junior economics major from Hoover. He says scheduled fundraising activities for the grant will include selling T-shirts and a letter writing campaign.

"We are grateful to have been selected as one of the matching grant recipients," said Vitta. "The grant will help us to continue to make a difference in the lives of people in need of affordable housing."

The Habitat chapter at BSC is one of 29 campus chapters nationwide to be awarded a matching grant from State Farm, the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity's youth programs.

Since the BSC chapter of Habitat for Humanity was re-established on campus in April 2009, the organization has helped build several homes around the Birmingham area.
