News from the HilltopFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Area residents receive education awards from Birmingham-Southern CollegeBIRMINGHAM, Ala.-A number of Birmingham-Southern students were presented awards by the college's Department of Education during the 2010 Honors Day Convocation. Listed alphabetically by hometown, they are: ATMORE: Kerrianne Castleberry - Phyllis M. Nielson Senior Book Award, given to outstanding seniors majoring in education and named after the late BSC education professor. Castleberry also received the Bell Teaching Award, given in honor of Dr. Bette Kersting Bell, former associate professor in education from 1995-2003. This award is given to BSC graduates in education obtaining a teaching certificate in any of the certification programs and who are employed in a teaching position in the year following graduation. BIRMINGHAM Area: COLUMBUS, MISS.: Victoria Harris - Louise H. Branscomb Award, given to a rising senior in the teacher education program who demonstrates a commitment to teaching youth and named in memory of Birmingham's first female physician, who also was a church and civic leader, advocate for social justice, and honorary BSC alumna. DECATUR, GA.: Aaron Parr - Phyllis M. Nielson Senior Book Award, given to outstanding seniors majoring in education and named after the late BSC education professor. FAIRHOPE: Alexandra Raber - Betty J. Poole Senior Teaching Award, given for excellence to rising seniors in collaborative education who demonstrate outstanding performance in working with special needs students and named after the late BSC collaborative education professor. FAYETTE: Ashley Hubbert - Bell Teaching Award, given in honor of Dr. Bette Kersting Bell, former associate professor in education from 1995-2003. KENDALL, WIS.: Natasha Stark - Phyllis M. Nielson Senior Book Award, given to outstanding seniors majoring in education and named after the late BSC education professor. Stark also received a Kappa Delta Epsilon National Award, given by the national chapter of the honorary to an outstanding education major. METAIRIE, LA.: Alexandra Middleton - Betty J. Poole Junior Teaching Award, given for excellence to rising juniors in collaborative education who demonstrate outstanding performance in working with special needs students and named after the late BSC collaborative education professor. MUSCLE SHOALS: Kelly Gronemeyer, a student in the BSC Harrison Honors Program - Phyllis M. Nielson Senior Book Award, given to outstanding seniors majoring in education and named after the late BSC education professor. |
