Dr. Susan Hagen receives Outstanding Educator Award at Birmingham-Southern

Dr. Susan Hagen receives outstanding educator award at Birmingham-SouthernBIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Dr. Susan K. Hagen, Mary Collett Munger Professor of English and director of the Donald C. Harrison Honors Program at Birmingham-Southern College, was presented with the annual Outstanding Educator Award during the college's 151st Commencement ceremony on May 15.

The award is given to an outstanding member of the BSC faculty based upon recommendations by his or her colleagues. It recognizes a faculty member who is characterized by excellence in all aspects of teaching, including scholarship, classroom performance, and student advising. The award includes a $2,500 cash stipend and an invitation to serve as speaker at the 2011 Commencement.

Hagen, who served as coordinator of the English faculty from 1983-1989, chair of the Division of Humanities from 1994-2000, and as associate dean at the college from 1998-2004, joined the BSC faculty in 1976. She currently serves as a senator of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Hagen holds a master's degree from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She earned her undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College.
