Houston native receives scholarships at Birmingham-Southern College

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-Birmingham-Southern College student Simone Schicker of Houston, Texas, is the recipient of the J. Stephen Noser Jr. Scholarship Award and the endowed Hubbs award presented during the college's 2010 Honors Day Convocation.

The Stephen Noser Jr. Scholarship was established in 1986 in memory of Noser, a Birmingham-Southern student who died while attempting to rescue a classmate from drowning. At the time, Noser was a participant in the British Studies at Oxford program. The scholarship supports Birmingham-Southern students who participate in the British Studies program.

The endowed Hubbs Scholarship was first awarded in 2006 by the family of LaMar and Louise Hubbs, parents of Guy Hubbs who is a BSC associate professor of library science and college archivist, to mark the Sesquicentennial year of the college. The purpose of the award is to honor the student who best exemplifies the twin principles upon which Birmingham-Southern College was founded: academic excellence and selfless service.

A junior history major in the college's Harrison Honors Program, Schicker is the daughter of Fiona and Gerard Schicker.
