News from the HilltopFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Birmingham-Southern College students take top two poetry prizes in state contestBIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Two Birmingham-Southern students won the top two poetry prizes in the second annual Fairhope Center for the Writing Arts Writing Contest. BSC freshman Jenny Broom from Center Point won first place with a prize of $250. Junior Mary Katherine Foster of Northern Shelby won second place with a prize of $150. The winners were announced at the Southern Writers Reading IX event held recently in Fairhope, Ala. The contest was open to all undergraduate college students in the state of Alabama. Contestants in the poetry division of the contest were judged on a portfolio of poems up to 10 pages. Broom, an undeclared major, is the daughter of Billy and Cynthia Broom. Foster, also an undeclared major, is the daughter of Gary and Holly Foster. |
