Local student receives teaching award at Birmingham-Southern College

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern senior Janira Santiago of Enterprise is the recipient of the Rutherford Ray Black Teaching Award presented during the college's 2009 Honors Day Convocation.

The award, which is presented to a graduating senior in teacher education who has demonstrated outstanding teaching ability, scholarship, and leadership, memorializes Black, who was a Birmingham-Southern education professor and 1930 graduate of the college.

Santiago is the daughter of Julio and Carmen Santiago. She graduated from Birmingham-Southern May 17.
