Birmingham-Southern students receive top academic awards

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College seniors Kathleen Smith of Hixson, Tenn., Peter Starr of Atlanta, Ga., and Clark Weber of Wetumpka are the recipients of the Alpha Lambda Delta Book Award. Starr and Weber also received the Robert Hewlin Jackson Meritorious Scholarship Award. All were presented during the college's 2009 Honors Day Convocation.

The Alpha Lambda Delta Book Award is given to graduating members of the chapter who have maintained the highest grade-point average throughout their college career.

The Robert Hewlin Jackson Meritorious Scholarship Award, given in memory of the 1862 graduate of Southern University, recognizes graduating seniors who have achieved the highest grade-point average during their four-year college career.

Smith is an interdisciplinary philosophy/politics/economics major and the daughter of Scott and Margaret Smith.

Starr is a history major and the son of Evelyn Smith of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Thrower Starr of Atlanta.

Weber is a computer science major and the son of Kim and Marcia Driggers Weber.
