Birmingham-Southern College kicks off series of firsts during combined Alumni Reunion, Homecoming weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—For the first time, Birmingham-Southern will host Alumni Reunion and Homecoming on the same weekend. The “Livin' for the Weekend” celebration will be Nov. 7-9, 2008, on the college's Hilltop campus and will feature a number of first-time events.

Included in the three-day celebration will be four historical performances by the BSC theatre students of “West Side Story” to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the BSC College Theatre building. The production opens Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and will show during the weekend on Nov. 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m., as well as Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.

Another historical first for the weekend will include a special service to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the BSC Yeilding Chapel on Saturday. A Service of Celebration and Rededication for the Next Forty Years will take place Nov. 8 in the chapel at 10 a.m. The service will feature former and current BSC chaplains Don Shockley, 1964-72; Mike Harper, 1976-79; Stewart Jackson, 1979-2007; and John Richardson, 2007 to present. A highlight of the service will be the rededication of the chapel with passages from the original service of dedication from 40 years ago.

Homecoming will mark another memorable first for the BSC community and will showcase the BSC vs. Sewanee football game Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m. It will be the first game on the college's new Panther Stadium home field. The Homecoming festivities will continue after the game with a band party on the BSC Admission Welcome Center lawn.

The weekend will conclude Sunday, Nov. 9, with a reception and reunion in the Admission Welcome Center Hulsey Hall at 5:30 p.m. honoring the 40-year anniversary of the BSC Theatre.

Other planned activities throughout the weekend include an Alumni Awards Luncheon and the BSC Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet. Also, it will be the first time ever that alumni reunion class parties will be held on campus, as well as the launch of the first college sponsored all-alumni philanthropy project. Traditional events include the President's Reception, mini-college lectures featuring BSC alumni and faculty, and a host of other activities for family enjoyment.
