'Southern Diversity Delegate selected at Birmingham-Southern College

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern junior Buddy Permenter of Gautier, Miss., will represent student opinions on issues of multiculturalism after being selected as the college's 2008-09 'Southern Diversity Delegate. Permenter, a computer science/math double major, was selected by a panel of judges and student vote.

His two-part platform is continued advocation for the implementation of curriculum at BSC focused on Africa and African studies and to plan and facilitate more intercultural events to bring together BSC students from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

“The 'Southern Diversity delegate serves as the primary student spokesperson for the Office of Multicultural Affairs and is given the opportunity to sponsor cultural programs, promote community building, and facilitate cross-cultural understanding within the Birmingham-Southern College community,” said Erica Brown, BSC director of multicultural affairs.

Permenter's other campus activities include being an active member of the Black Student Union, volunteering through service-learning, and singing in the BSC Gospel Choir. He will coordinate Diversity Week activities coming up in April.

He is the son of Shannon and Tammy Boykin.
