Birmingham-Southern student accepted to summer study within British Parliament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College student Nicholas Arciniegas, a political science major from Mountain Brook, has been accepted to the Hansard Scholars Programme and will study British politics at the London School of Economics this summer. He is one of only approximately 20 students selected from applicants from around the world.

Arciniegas, who will be a senior at BSC in the fall, will complete an 11-week summer course which will include 20 hours per week of work as an intern.

The academic course examines the constitutional and political process in Britain including the role of Parliament, the prime minister and the civil service, as well as the policymaking process. It also analyzes current policy issues including the economy, civil liberties and foreign policy.

Hansard Scholars will each pursue individual research projects culminating in an 8,000-10,000 word dissertation. They are required to attend bi-weekly guest lectures by former British cabinet ministers, members of the main British political parties, experienced lobbyists and policy experts, as well as political journalists from national newspapers. The program also includes political study visits to Edinburgh, Scotland, and the city of Oxford to the world famous Oxford University.

Participants will also experience London culture through theatre trips to some of the top shows playing in London's famous West End.

Arciniegas is the son of Dr. Joaquin and Beatriz Arciniegas. He is a graduate of Mountain Brook High School.
