Birmingham-Southern College professor receives faculty award at honors ceremony

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Duane Pontius Jr., T. Morris Hackney Professor of Physics at Birmingham-Southern College, is the recipient of the Richebourg Gaillard McWilliams Faculty Scholarship Award presented during the college's 2008 Honors Day Convocation.

The award, which includes a $2,500 cash stipend, is named for the late English professor who taught at BSC for more than 40 years. It is given to an outstanding member of the faculty based upon recommendations by his or her colleagues.

Pontius, an alumnus of BSC, earned his undergraduate degree from the college in physics. He holds a doctoral degree in space physics and astronomy from Rice University.
